At Peter Gladwin we believe that we should always work in partnership with our pupils parents/carers and keep them informed about school systems and policies. This booklet tells you: What our policies for behaviour and attendance are How we reward pupils for good behaviour How we deal with unacceptable behaviour What support is available for pupils and parents What to do and who to talk to if you have concerns Our school rules and values Our Policy: Our Positive Behaviour Policy is updated on a regular basis so we know what is expected. (A full copy of the policy is available on request and on our website). The policy works on the following principles: Everyone follows the three School Rules: 1. Be on time for every lesson 2. Try your best in every lesson 3. Be kind and polite to everyone you meet Everyone in school has rights and corresponding responsibilities Positive behaviour/social skills need to be actively taught We recognize language and learning needs are often central to emotional, social and behaviour issues Positive reinforcement and expectations encourage positive behaviour and attitudes Good lesson planning and differentiation enables pupils to access the curriculum and to socialise, and minimises occurrences of wrong choices and unacceptable behaviour We recognise some pupils require a differentiated approach and need extra support We ensure we are rewarding consistently positive behaviour and attitudes to learning. How will my child be rewarded for good behaviour & work? Verbal praise, smiles and encouragement Positive comments when marking work Name on the positive side of the PGS Behaviour Chart (EYFS & KS1) Marbles in the jar and Marble Treats Stickers and commendation certificates Friday Growth Mindset certificates and celebrations of achievement Attendance certificates Some children may need extra help and we may set up individual behaviour systems or contracts for them. This will be done with the child and their parent/carer. What happens if my child makes a wrong choice or displays unacceptable behaviour? We treat all pupils fairly and all staff follow our positive behaviour policy. We take account of a pupils educational and emotional needs but must be consistent and clear about our expectations to make sure our school is a safe and respectful place to be. Pupils may: Be given a verbal warning or thinking time. Have Time In, or Time Out if incidents continue. Time Out means missing some playtime and having behaviour recorded on the schools CPOMS system. If incidents are serious or persistent, have SEN TA / SLT involvement, and parents/carers informed and involved. Very serious behaviour may result in internal, lunchtime or fixed-term exclusion. Continuous serious behaviour or one extremely serious incident may result in permanent exclusion. We always keep you informed and try to find a positive way to deal with the situation. What should I do if I am concerned about a behaviour incident? Whatever the problem, we know that it can be very worrying and stressful for parents if they feel their child is in trouble . We will always involve parents if an incident is serious or if the same small problem keeps happening. If however you are concerned about anything please contact us as soon as possible. Please talk to the class teacher first. They will often have first-hand information of any incident. If required, other members of staff may be involved. Whatever happens, we will always find the facts out first then deal calmly with the problem. How do I contact staff at school? Contact the class teacher first by ringing the office to make an appointment, or by prior arrangement with the teacher. Staff will always support pupils as much as possible in their educational, social and emotional needs. The teacher, teaching assistant or midday supervisor will be the initial person dealing with behaviour incidents. As well as consultation with parents, teachers may look for extra support for your child from: The SENCO Lunchtime Club and SEN TA The More-Able Pupils Co-ordinator The Head or Deputy Head Teacher Counselling Services BHISS (Brighton & Hove Inclusion Support Service, including Learning and Communication support and Social, Emotional and Mental Health support) Schools Attendance Officer School Nurse Child Protection Team & Social Services (Front Door For Families) EMAS (Ethnic Minority Achievement Service) Where can parents get extra information and support? In the first instance please speak to your childs class teacher for extra information and support. Extra support and information may be available from: Our Special Educational Needs TA and More-Able Pupils Co-ordinator AMAZE (support for parents with children who have SEN) Mosaic (support for black, Asian and mixed race families) Schools Attendance Officer Please let your class teacher know if you want to contact any of these people or organizations. Lunchtime Club The club is run daily from 12pm 1pm and pupils are invited or asked to attend on the following basis: To prevent incidents at lunchtime To prevent further incidents when issues have already previously arisen To give vulnerable/withdrawn pupils a sheltered place to play To provide a place to learn social skills e.g. sharing, taking turns etc. To provide a safe space for play for pupils with medical needs e.g. arm in plaster To enable staff to closely monitor and assess social skills and needs of specific pupils, so that we can support their development and learning Principles of running the club Only invited pupils may attend and the club is supervised by the SEN TA and other staff members. Lunchtime club can be an opportunity for reflection, an intervention or a support mechanism; this depends on the individual child. Every effort is made to ensure pupils understand why they are being asked to attend. Attendance at Lunchtime Club Some pupils attend frequently, others for a fixed period, e.g. following incidents in class/at playtime. Some will be invited to attend as a good role model for others or as a treat for excellent behaviour. Some will be invited to attend as a friend to another child. Activities at Lunchtime Club Variety of games and activities that encourage positive social play If applicable, sitting with members of staff and discussing their behaviour If applicable, engaging in a reflective activity based on the PGS Rights Respecting School Charter. School Attendance & Punctuality Regular attendance at school is essential for any childs education and we are dedicated to working with parents to make sure their childs attendance and punctuality is as good as possible. Children are expected to be on time for every lesson, including registration and the start of the school day. What do I do if my child cannot attend school? Inform the school as soon as possible (by 9am). If we have not heard from you we will phone you. Let us know as soon as you can if your child is likely to be off for more days. If you cannot make a phone call, please make sure your child (on return to school) has a letter or note to let us know reasons for absence. What about holidays? Only in exceptional/unavoidable circumstances are Head Teachers allowed to permit absence during term time. Ten days is the maximum allowed. You must inform the school and fill in an application form beforehand. Any more than ten days (apart from exceptional circumstances) will be marked as an unauthorized absence. Please do not book holidays during SATS month (May) unless you are sure it is within the schools half-term dates. What if we have a problem getting to school? If there is a recurrent or long-term problem getting to school or getting here on time, please come and talk to us as soon as possible. We may be able to provide support and advice to help you out. Punctuality is important! Pupils who arrive late often find it much harder to settle to work. Children who arrive on time and come to school regularly achieve much more highly at school than those that dont! Our Rules at Peter Gladwin Our Positive Behaviour Policy is based on our three School Rules . These rules are displayed in every classroom and around the school.
